AAPD President Referenced in School Nurse News

AAPD President Dr. Joel H. Berg was interviewed by School Nurse News regarding the important issues surrounding student and dental trauma. The article was published in the November 2012 issue.

When an impact to the head is forceful enough to knock out a child’s tooth, the child needs to be assessed neurologically, according to Joel Berg, D.D.S., president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Berg suggests, if possible, replanting the tooth within 30 minutes. "The tooth needs to be replanted into the socket immediately. The longer the tooth exists outside the socket, the more reduced are its chances of survival."

"It’s not advised to return a baby tooth into the socket because it might be exposed to bacteria as the new permanent tooth emerges," says Berg.
